Rebecca’s Card Challenge

On Tuesday I left home again for eight days – I flew out of town to take some real estate classes. My very good friend Rebecca flew with me and mentioned that she’d packed some craft supplies in her suitcase. WHAT?! She had room for craft supplies?!  And – what?! Bringing craft supplies from home? I have never thought of making cards on a business trip or vacation, but Rebecca is always full of fun ideas.

Before I continue, I must explain the “WHAT”s – my class instructor from the first two days is a cross between George Costanza and Newman from Seinfeld and he amused us with his loud “WHAT?!”s during class.  Now it’s time to get back to the blog post!

She said she didn’t have time to pack everything she wanted, so she ended up with a mish-mash of semi-random supplies from Close to My Heart (CTMH), Stampin’ Up, and JoAnn’s and Michael’s craft stores. As we flipped through Paper Crafts magazine on the plane, I said she could think of this as a card challenge like I see in blogs and in magazines. Rebecca took that thought and ran with it – deciding that we (her step-mom, herself, and me) would make cards with only the supplies we brought. If we purchased anything on the trip, we would not be allowed to use them or the card would be disqualified. Rebecca runs a tight ship.

We parted ways after our flight. I went to my hotel for my business classes, and she and her step-mom (Anita) headed off to their timeshare condo. I was amused as I received nightly photo text messages of the open suitcase with the craft supplies; craft supplies all over the dining room table; and some beautiful cards Rebecca had made. She was just teasing me – she was having fun while I was staying focused in class (I enjoyed my classes, though).

On Saturday night, I finally joined Rebecca and Anita at the condo. We enjoyed a meal out together, and came back to make some cards! It was 11:15 at night when we started and I stopped at 12:25 am. I do not usually feel creative at this hour, so it was unlike me to make cards… but how could I resist?

I made two cards to add to Rebecca’s four and Anita’s four cards. I have no idea who will be the judge that Rebecca keeps referring to, so I’ll wait to reveal some of our cards until I’ve had a chance to catch up.

For now, I will share with you some photos Rebecca’s camera phone took of the suitcase and table:

Every year, Ken and I take an anniversary trip. I scrapbook my wedding album on the plane. I have a scrapbooking backpack full of supplies that holds my album, my cell phone, headphones and wallet.
My wedding album is 8 X 8, so it fits nicely in the pack. I use my tray in front of my seat and Ken’s tray off and on, when necessary…sometimes he hold items as I dig through the pack. I tape the bag that comes in each seat pocket (yes, that one), to the back of the seat and use it for trash. I use the seat pocket for my small Fiskars paper cutter and larger items. I always get comments from stewardesses and they want to see the album. Reading this, it sounds as though I haven’t been married that long, but we are about to celebrate our 35th anniversary in Sept. I’m not slow at scrapbooking…I just didn’t start this album until I began scrapbooking in 2001 and I only work on it on my anniversary trips. I’m way too busy scrapbooking grandkid’s and my neice and nephew’s albums. I’m almost done with my wedding album! Six or eight more spreads and I will be done and have to start bringing my 25th anniversary album on my trips to work on.

That’s really sweet, Lori! I admire you for being able to scrap while on a plane. I could not do that. Kenny is so patient to let him use his tray, too. Thanks for sharing your story. 🙂

She actually only brought one suitcase and one carry-on. They didn’t bat an eyes as she glided through security with her large orange Fiskars paper cutter! She didn’t have to wear any clothes that needed ironing and she seemed to have plenty of room for clothes, shoes and crafts – Rebecca is a very experience traveler. 🙂

Thanks Dinnae!! She and I wish she’d thought to bring more SU! items but she only brought the jumbo wheel with a cartridge and a house wheel stamp. she used it on envelopes for a real estate mailing she was doing.
