Christmas Cards Made with Odds and Ends

Years ago, when I first got into stamping, I would test-drive a new stamp by making a few embellishments with it.  What I mean is I would stamp and emboss it or color it, brayer over it – whatever – and save it for a future card.  Yeah… ummm, as a friend of mine asks, “How’s that working for you?” Not so well.  I have a box full of things I will use on cards someday an instead of digging through them, I’m always creating new cards from scratch.  When I went away for a crafty card-making weekend, I was determined to use up some of these odds and ends I had created!  So, this post is about the four cards I made from things I had stamped over a year ago.  It sure felt good to finally use them up, and I’m sure they are happy to finally be used.

I was inspired by a technique I saw the owner of Local King Rubber Stamp share at the CKC (Creating Keepsakes Convention) last year and wanted to try it myself.  I stamped the silhouette image onto glossy cardstock with a StazOn ink pad and then punched a circle from a sticky note and placed it where I wanted the moon.  Then I took a rubber Speedball brayer to a gradient Big and Juicy ink pad and inked it up until the brayer was juicy with ink.  I rolled it back and forth over my image and peeled off the sticky circle and filled it in with a yellow marker.

I just love this little gingerbread house stamp, but it’s a pain in the neck to color all the tiny details!  I used my sparkly Copic Spica AtYou glitter markers to color the image and then added puffy snow with white Liquid Applique.  I used a Fiskars border punch and threaded ribbon through the holes.  I guess it’s not designed for card-makers because even if I had punched it a little more to the left, I think I still wouldn’t have a perfectly symmetrical thread of ribbon… arggh.  I used a rub-on for the sentiment and embellished the card with ribbon from my growing stash.

These next two cards were made with very old embellishments!  I used to throw big holiday parties every year and I bought this stamp in 2002 or 2003 for the invitation.  I accented the “i” with a colorful rhinestone and added some festive holiday ribbon.

This card used TWO old embellishments – the embossed snowflake background and the stamped and embossed image!  I was so glad I could use two old items together to create one new card.

Do you have a stash of incomplete embellishments you’ll use for cards someday?  I challenge you to pull them out and make cards with them – you’ll feel so good to give life to those old stamped images you’ve had in a box for ages.

Thank you for reading my blog!  🙂
